About Mountain Heart Acupuncture

Dr Jessica Parks, DACM, LAc

For me, healing happens not only through technique and knowledge, but through presence, empathy, and the simple act of showing up wholeheartedly for each person I have the privilege to care for. I endeavor for my practice as an acupuncturist to be guided by principles of gentle loving kindness and compassion.

The roots of Chinese medicine are firmly grounded in this perspective. Years ago, working alongside a group of acupuncturists, I was astonished at how profoundly effective and transformational their work was and I became fascinated with learning more about Chinese medicine. I’m honored to have studied with Master Jeffrey Yuen and Dr. Jing Liu and to offer this amazingly comprehensive system of healing to the community here in College Park, Maryland.

I was born in Washington, DC, and grew up in College Park near the campus, so it feels like I’ve come full circle and am excited to be of service here in my place of origin.

The Healing Power of Compassion

Before entering the acupuncture profession, I was a massage therapist for over 20 years. During this time, I personally witnessed the healing power of touch and a heart-centered approach to medicine. I believe that kindness and compassion are not extras in health care, they are essential.

The Importance of Therapeutic Touch

I also deeply value the power of therapeutic touch. Thoughtful, intentional touch has been linked to reduced stress and pain, improved mental health, and a greater sense of connection and trust.

Care That Comes From Experience

Research continues to show that compassionate care can help lower blood pressure, ease pain, and even support faster recovery from illness and injury. I see this reflected in my work every day.

A Space Where You Feel Safe and Heard

Creating a space where you feel safe, heard, and genuinely cared for is just as important to me as the treatment itself.

I believe that happiness and health to a great extent requires a healthy work-life balance.

I try to practice what I preach in the treatment rooms and follow a path that makes my
heart sing! When I’m not working, I enjoy practicing yoga and meditation in my living room, cutting a rug dancing to some great music whenever humanly possible, digging in the dirt, playing with my dog Francis, searching for mushrooms (just one of mother nature’s gold treasures!), seeking out wild bodies of clean water to submerge in, cooking food that makes me feel alive, and making herbal medicine.

Like the ancient mothers and fathers of Chinese medicine, I truly believe that prevention is the best medicine and that regular movement, a healthy diet, and a grateful heart is the key to a long, happy life.

FAQ’s

Questions I Hear Most Often.

Everyone comes to this work with different histories, hopes, and curiosities. Here are a few answers to the things people tend to ask before their first session so you can feel grounded and informed before you arrive.

Does acupuncture hurt?

Most people are surprised at how gentle it feels. The sensations can range from barely noticeable to a soft, warm, “wave” feeling moving through the body. My approach is slow, subtle, and extremely mindful.

I work with pain conditions, stress + nervous system regulation, insomnia, fertility support, hormonal balancing, digestive imbalances, migraines, and chronic tension patterns.

Your first visit is usually around 75–90 minutes so I can get a full picture of your health story. Follow-ups are typically 60 minutes.

Not usually. I can access most points from forearms, lower legs, feet, hands, and head/neck area. Loose clothing is perfect.

Every body is different. Some people feel a shift after 1–2 sessions, others benefit from a series over several weeks. We’ll talk through a plan that feels realistic for your goals.
